The Greatest Toontown Series Ever (Kinda)
July 23rd 2023
Yeah, okay, this is another blog post about Toontown. What of it?
Do you ever have such a niche interest that you'd consider yourself lucky to meet even 5 other fans of it personally? That's how I feel about the greatest Toontown based webseries ever created.
What are you talking about?
Many many years ago, when I was a little child, I stumbled upon a video while searching the internet for content of my favorite MMO, it was labelled as a "Toontown Horror Movie", and of course I decided to watch it.
This "movie" absolutely changed my brain chemistry as a child. And by that I mean gave me a month worth of nightmares, despite the fact it is not actually scary at all. But that's just how kids are.
The COG movie was one of the most iconic pieces of media derived from Toontown back in the 2011-2013 era, but not a lot of people actually watched the rest of madtoontownreturn's content, at least I feel like they haven't.
Madtoontownreturns went beyond just the COG movie, with its main focus being "The End Trilogy", a series of stories following a group of chosen heroes that told the tale of the end of Toontown in the edgiest most exaggerated fashion possible.
That sounds stupid.
It kind of was! But isn't that the charm of early 2010s internet media? Seeing Toontown burst into flames as the Toons and Cogs fight each other with heavy gunfire was the absolute peak of fiction for my little brain.
The End Trilogy had several characters throughout the years, but its main cast consisted of heroes such as Bad Kitty, Junkyard Dog, Tiffany, Bear E. Funny, Morris, Jessie and John.
And a long cast of villains such as Antonius, Max, Cliff, Daphne and Mr. Happy.
All of which actually receive quite interesting character development and plot threads as the series progresses, featuring betrayal, death, and drama.
BUT it's all still pretty stupid. In the best way possible.
And the craziest thing about the series to me, is that it's still ongoing. After a hiatus of a few years, The End Trilogy returned about 7 years ago with a full length movie called "The Monster Within", and it has been consitently updating since.
Along the way, the creator started a new series, titled Ayumu. Which served as an interesting tie between the stories told in the COG movie and The End Trilogy, making all of those separate tales into one massive world that is entirely connected.
Since Ayumu released, I've picked up MTTR's content again and have always kept up with it. And it is actually crazy to see the growth in both video quality and writing that it has had. The passion it requires to be still working on a project you started over 12 years ago and to continue improving it is crazy and honestly a genuine inspiration of mine.
As much as I poke fun at how absurd MTTR is objectively, it is also one of the greatest examples of a passion project I've ever seen. I really recommend giving some of the videos in the channel a shot, they're entertainment no matter what.
I hope this was an enjoyable read!
